Mundan is the ceremony of shaving the head of a child. It is
performed for both the girls as well as the boys. In some communities, this
practice of Mundan is accompanied with the ear piercing of the child. This
ritual of shaving the head is considered to be very fortunate for the child as
it signifies purity and that the child would be blessed with good health. Of
course the child will get good hair also.
The Mundan ceremony, as per the Grhya Sutras, should be
performed once the baby turns 12 months old or before the age of 3. If it is
not possible to perform the ritual during the mentioned period, then the ritual
will have to wait until the child turns 7. Now-a-days, the ritual Mundan is
performed during the 1st, 3rd, 5th or 7th year. It is usually avoided to do the
ritual during the even year, i.e. 2nd, 4th and so on. Mundan ceremony is a very
grand occasion in many homes. It is considered very auspicious if the Mundan of
the first child is performed at the Kuldevta temple. Mundan ceremony is
considered important in many religions. Muslims conduct this ceremony by
applying curd on the child’s hair before shaving the head. Mundan ceremony also
goes by many names such as Chaula or Chudakarana.
Mundan ceremony is considered as one of the most important
Sanskars in Hinduism. It is the eighth Sanskar of the 16 Sanskars in the Hindu
culture.
Many people also think that if the hair growth is more the child
may not gain health and so getting Mundan done may be good for the child’s
overall health and growth while some believe that Mundan helps the child to get
good hair growth. Whatever the myths and whatever the beliefs Mundan ceremony
has great significance in the Hindu religion.
After the head is shaved it
is covered with sandal paste to avoid any form of irritation. This
ceremony is further continued by offering prayers to the God and getting
blessings from the elders. The ritual is generally carried out at home; whereas
some may perform the same in a temple or on the sacred Ghats of Ganga or Jamuna
river. The hair are then collected by the parents and thrown into the river.
This is essential so that the hair cannot be used in witch craft for harming
the child and the parents or the family.
Performing Mundan ceremony at the right time (Shubh Muhurat) and
date is very important. This auspicious Hindu ceremony is considered a must in
many of the Hindu communities.
